This was a serendipitous shot. One night I decided to walk back to Boston from Cambridge before catching my subway line. As I passed the Boston University Boat House on Memorial Drive I noticed the view and, surprisingly, remembered that I had my camera. With the cold and wind I only snapped off about twenty pictures, but using the railing to support the camera and playing with exposure levels made a few shots come out beautifully... at least in my opinion. ;)

The large building on the right is Prudential Tower, and the tall glass building on the left is the John Hancock Tower. The little building to the left of that with the blue-lighted spire is the Berkeley Building, or "Old John Hancock Building." Its lights can be blue or red and sometimes blink the mode depends on the weather or, more importantly, if a Red Sox night game has been canceled due to the weather.

This shot was intentionally over-exposed by 2/3 stop to catch more detail, then I subdued the "fuzzy brightness" by adding a desaturated overlay of the image at 50% opacity.

Download for a larger version. If you want to use it, please just give me credit and send a note.

The very talented :iconcainkinris: used this as a reference for a speedpaint, Night Light Daily.

Looks very serene. It reminds me of Jacksonville on the water front only less humid. I should really try to make it up there one day. After all that driving out west Boston would just be a brief jaunt.

I know what you mean. After a few of my cross-country expeditions a five-hour drive to upstate New York seemed like just going out for coffee. If you ever do come up this way then we'd definitely have to meet for lunch or dinner (at least!), but I'm guessing it will be a while before you're ready to make another road trip.

Excellent. I was hoping you'd share some more of your photograpy!

Thanks. :) I have a few more that might be worth submitting, but I like to sit on them for a while and make sure they're really all that before I post them.

Now that I've found my portable tripod I should be able to do many more shots with "interesting lighting" and whatnot. With two 8 GB cards (each capable of holding about two thousand pictures in the second-highest resolution) and plenty of batteries for the camera, hopefully there will be many more worth sharing.

Very nice, the only time I walked Boston was when I took my brother on an 80 minute adventure from a really nice park, through China town, and eventually to the harbour.
